Steffen Walther

Steffen Walther wurde 1963 geboren. Bei Domorganist Günter Metz in Zwickau erhielt er seinen ersten Orgelunterricht. Er studierte in Dresden und Halle Kirchenmusik in den Fächern Orgel, Improvisation, Cembalo und Dirigieren. Interpretationskurse u.a. bei Ewald Kooiman ergänzten seine Orgelstudien. Er legte 1986 sein A-Examen ab und gewann 1985 und 1986 1. Preise bei Improvisationswettbewerben in Weimar und Halle. Seit 1986 ist Steffen Walther Kantor und Organist an der Kreuzkirche Chemnitz, seit 2006 zusätzlich an der Jakobikirche.
Er nimmt eine umfangreiche Konzerttätigkeit im In- und Ausland (Frankreich, Schweiz, Niederlande, Finnland, Norwegen und Belgien) sowie CD-, Rundfunk- und Fernsehpro-duktionen wahr. Seit 1991 ist er Dozent für künstlerisches und liturgisches Orgelspiel an der Hochschule für Kirchenmusik Dresden. 2015/16 hatte Steffen Walther einen Lehr-auftrag für Improvisation an der Hochschule für Musik „Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy“ in Leipzig inne. Schwerpunkte neben seiner intensiven Chorarbeit sind experimentelle Projekte mit Künstlern unterschiedlichster Couleur. Dabei liegt ihm die Begegnung mit anderen Ausdrucksformen Tanz, Malerei, Literatur etc. besonders in seiner Konzertreihe „Orgelplus“ am Herzen.

Steffen Walther was born in 1963. He received his first organ instruction from the cathedral organist Günther Metz in Zwickau. He studied church music (organ, impro-visation, harpsichord and conducting) in Dresden and Halle. His organ studies were supplemented through courses in interpretation by Ewald Kooiman, among others. He completed his A-exam in 1986 and received first prizes (1985,1986) in improvisation competitions in Weimar and Halle. Since 1986, Steffen Walther is the cantor and organist at the Kreuzkirche in Chemnitz, and as of 2006 at the Jakobikirche as well.
He engages in extensive concert activities at home and abroad (France, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Finland, Norway and Belgium), and participates in numerous CD, radio and television productions. Since 1991, he has been a lecturer in concert and liturgical organ playing at the College of Church Music in Dresden. In 2015/16, Steffen Walther held a teaching assignment for improvisation at the Music College “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” in Leipzig. In addition to his intensive choral work, he focuses on experimental projects with artists of all persuasions.
Contact with other forms of expression such as free dance, painting, literature, etc. lies close to his heart. This connection is especially on display in his concert series “Organplus”.
